RESUMO:

Introduction: The aims of this study were: (1) to determine the influence of HEBP associated to NaOCl in different irrigation protocols regarding the penetration of endodontic sealer/calcium hydroxide intracanal medication inside dentinal tubules, compared with  a protocol using EDTA and NaOCl ; and (2) to verify if there is correlation between  maximum depth of penetration and segment of penetration of endodontic sealer/calcium hydroxide medication

Methods: Ninety Single-rooted human teeth were distributed into 3 groups, according to the irrigation protocol during instrumentation and at final rinse: P1- mixture of 18%HEBP+2.5% NaOCl; P2- 2.5% NaOCl/18% HEBP/2.5% NaOCl; P3- 2.5% NaOCl/18% HEBP/2.5% NaOCl. After chemomechanical preparation, 45 teeth received the UltraCal XS calcium hydroxide intracanal medication (groups P1m, P2m and P3m) and the other 45 teeth were obturated by the single cone technique with the AH Plus sealer (groups P1s, P2s and P3s). All samples underwent Confocal Laser Scanning Mycroscopy analysis, in order to obtain the measurements of maximum depth of penetration and segment of penetration for sealer/medication.

Results: Overall measurements of depth of penetration and segment of penetration, for both sealer and medication, were statistically similar among the irrigation protocols (P>0.05). The 2 variables demonstrated significantly higher values at cervical root third than at apical third. There was a significant direct correlation (P<0.0), moderate to strong, between endodontic sealer/intracanal medication maximum depth of penetration and segment of penetration.

Conclusions: Protocols using HEBP, either in mixture with NaOCl or followed by NaOCl,  were as effective as the protocol using EDTA associated with NaOCl on providing penetration of endodontic sealer/calcium hydroxide intracanal medication inside dentinal walls. There was direct correlation between endodontic sealer/calcium hydroxide medication depth of penetration and segment of penetration.
