RESUMO:

The 5th generation (5G) and the next generations of cellular networks seek to mitigate the most diverse challenges inherent to mobile networks due to the constant and growing data generation. The development of new technological solutions for cellular network communication aims to allow greater scalability, ubiquity, and continuity of services, meeting requirements crucial to its proper functioning, such as reliability, latency, and throughput. In this sense, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) equipped with communication devices and working as base stations can potentially be increasingly present to improve the most diverse services and transmission of information, thanks to their ability to reach hard-to-reach areas. Such devices have great potential to support mobile users in low connectivity situations or without any connectivity. In this case, they assist or even replace damaged or overloaded terrestrial infrastructure. However, the viability of UAVs to this end is still an open question, given the most diverse challenges such as resource allocation techniques, cooperation with existing ground units and between the various UAVs, coordination with user mobility, computational efficiency, collision prevention, and recharging approaches. To study the feasibility of UAVs to support networks in scenarios with low or no connectivity, this work studies the existing proposals, high-lighting the main requirements needed and proposing a scheme that seeks to serve the most diverse scenarios generically. In summary, this thesis evaluates the impact of the presence of UAVs working as base stations, studies the impact of different positioning algorithms and user mobility prediction, highlights the need for a user association approach, and ultimately shows directions for creating an intelligent management system for using UAVs to serve users with low or no connectivity.
