The Academic Master's degree course in Social work is bound to the graduate program in Social work (PPGSS), the Institute for applied social sciences (ICSA), of the Federal University of Pará (UFPA). It was established in the year 1996, recognized by CAPES through resolution No. 3166/CONSEP, 5/3/2004, and approved by Ordinance No. 2878/CNE, 8/24/2005. Its creation has emerged as a challenge to the strengthening of a critical mass of intellectuals in the area of Social services, able to develop study and research, interpret and respond to expressions of the "social question" in the Amazon region. The master's degree course in Social work of Academic PPGSS/UFPA and Academic Master's degree course in Social work and sustainability in the Amazon, the Federal University of Amazonas (UFAM), are in only the masters of this field of knowledge throughout the northern region of Brazil.

The first dissertation of master's degree course in Social work was defended after two years of progress (1998) and, over the course of nearly twenty years of existence, were defended dissertations 174, which shows a reduced and a significant number of masters in Social work with potential for verticalization of the process of continuing education in doctoral level. Registers in the period from 2007 to 2014 1 average of 14 dissertations defended by year, which highlights the consolidation of course as graduate program in the context of the UFPA, and its importance for Social services in the region.

In the period of 1998 to 2014, a diversity of themes concerning expressions of the "social question" and topics related to professional practice, namely: work, public and social policies (housing, transportation, public safety, welfare, sanitation, social assistance, education, health), professional exercise of the social worker, social control, urban and agrarian question issue, environment, social movements and trade unions, among others.

The set of dissertations produced there as a locus of research, in addition to the capital of the State of Pará, several municipalities from Pará (Ananindeua, Castanhal, Barcarena, Cameta, Soure, Abaetetuba, Moju, Santarém, Lookout, Capanema, Carajás, necklaces, Curuçá, Igarapé Miri, Marabá, Marituba, Porto de Moz, São Geraldo do Araguaia, Santo Antônio do Tauá and Tomé-Açu). Searches encompass various regions of Pará, as well as other Amazonian States (Amapa, Maranhao and Tocantins).

Thus, it appears that the target audience of the master's degree in Social work from UFPA is not restricted to the State of Pará, but absorbs the demand from other States, mainly of Maranhao and Tocantins.

The follow-up of graduates conducted by PPGSS shows the insertion of these in federal institutions of higher education (Federal University of Pará (UFPA), Instituto Federal de Educação, Ciência e Tecnologia do Pará (IFPA), Universidade Federal do Maranhão (UFMA), Universidade Federal Rural da Amazônia (UFRA) Universidade Estadual do Amapá (UEAP) and Universidade Estadual do Pará (UEPA).

Registers a significant inclusion of graduates on condition of teachers of higher education: private higher education institution in southern Maranhão (TIN/UNISULMA); Faculty of technological education of Amazon (FAETAM), Italian Brazilian (FIB) College, University of Ceuma (FROM UNICEUMA), Tapajós integrated faculties (FIT), Pan-Amazonian College (FAPAN); Mother Celeste (ESMAC), Faculdades Integradas Brazil Amazon s/s Ltda. (fiber), State University Vale do Acaraú (UVA-CE), Montenegro (FAM) College and University of the Amazon (ESAMAZ), Faculdade de Macapá (FAMA) and Macapaense of the Best higher education Institute (IMMES).

The technical condition of the upper level, the adoption in procurement of the graduates of PPGSS/UFPA on own UFPA, Federal universities (Rural da Amazônia/UFRA and Amapá/UNIFAP) and municipal departments of health, Social assistance and Welfare institutes (INSS and IASEP-Institute of assistance of the servants of the State of Pará).

Historically, vale registrar that in year 2000 the Federal University of Pará established a cooperation agreement with the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, when they passed the doctoral course at the school of Social Service at UFRJ six teachers from the Faculty of Social services of the UFPA. As of 2006, four of these doctors have to existing faculty PPGSS/UFPA, and come from adding their research and teaching activities and guidance to the program. In that time, the program has formed a stable workforce that gave the program. organic

Currently, the Faculty of PPGSS/UFPA consists of 10 (ten) teachers, all with a background in Social work and PhD degree in several areas of knowledge/institutions, seven permanent and three employees. Of the seven permanent faculty members, four are doctors in Social services, both in sociology and one in Environmental Sciences. Of the three teachers Associates, has a doctorate in Social work, one in social and environmental development and a in political science. In the year 2015, it was possible the implementation of the national program Scholarship postdoctoral (PNPD/CAPES), why the program now has the support of a visiting Professor.

As part of the Program, qualifying efforts of all teachers, six have already performed Post Doctoral Internship, with three national institutions (UFPE, UFRJ) and three international institutions (University of Buenos Aires/Argentina, University of Porto/Portugal Lyrics and free University of Berlin/Germany).

Teachers of PPGSS have submitted to the Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq) Fellowship applications of research productivity, and in 2015, two teachers were included with this Bag, PQ mode 2 Level, which is of great importance to the advancement of research of the Faculty of PPGSS.

The Academic Master's degree course in Social Service as concentration area "Social services, Work and social policy" that articulates two research lines: 1) Social services and Work in the Amazon; 2) Social services and social policies in the Amazon supported by knowledge of the groups of studies and Research linked to them, namely: the research group, City Housing and human space (GEP-CIHAB); Research lab and social practices in the Amazon region (LABPSAM); Group of studies and research in management, planning and Democratization of public policies in the Amazon region (GESPLAM); Group of studies and research Work, State and society in the Amazon (G-TESA); Group of studies and Research in Social work, Social Policy and vocational training (GEPSS).

The graduate program in Social work of UFPA expressed today, the result of qualifying effort of faculty and students through a collective planning of academic activities, counting with the support of the Office of the Dean of research and graduate studies (PROPESP/UFPA).
